Saroj Gupta Cancer Center & Research Institute

The word "cancer" evokes fear, pronouncing an ultimatum and writing an epitaph in the minds of many. Unless you have experienced it firsthand or watched a loved one struggle, you may not truly understand the desperation cancer can cause. Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, with tobacco alone accounting for 30% of all cancer cases. However, awareness can reduce cancer-related deaths by 50%, and early detection offers a chance for cure.

In early 1973, witnessing the plight of cancer patients who struggled to find a bed, let alone proper care, Dr. Saroj Gupta, then a young Radiotherapist, formed a society with a group of doctors, social workers, and philanthropists. His mission was to establish a Cancer Centre for cancer-afflicted patients and their families, with a special emphasis on the underprivileged. At Thakurpukur, on a piece of marshy land donated by the family of Late Chintaharan Das, the Saroj Gupta Cancer Center & Research Institute was established initially to provide a haven for distressed cancer patients who traveled from remote villages for treatment. The first fundraising event was a drama staged by a group called Sikha, based on a story written by Dr. Saroj Gupta, where he himself enacted the role of a poor cancer patient denied a bed in a city hospital. The audience was moved to tears by the poignant fact that there was no place for him in a big city with tall buildings and big hospitals, despite his strong desire to live. Many in the audience joined hands with Dr. Gupta to help him in his fight against cancer.

Over three decades, with unimaginable help from all walks of life, from the poorest of the poor and school children to different industrialists and celebrities, the hospital has evolved into a fully comprehensive, 311-bedded dedicated cancer hospital, now renamed as the Saroj Gupta Cancer Center & Research Institute. Spread across 16 acres of lush greenery with amenities like amusement parks and toy trains, the institute provides a healing environment for patients amidst their grueling treatments. The institute has kept pace with science and technology, continuously upgrading its facilities. The latest diagnostic facilities, radiotherapy machines, and surgical gadgets for all kinds of complicated surgeries are now available in specially designed units. All these facilities are available at affordable prices to people from all walks of life.

This Institute has received many national and international accolades and is recognized by the WHO and is a member of the UICC, the International Organization against Cancer.

Saroj Gupta Cancer Center & Research Institute is not just a hospital; it is a beacon of hope for cancer patients, a symbol of resilience, and a testament to the indomitable human spirit in the face of adversity.
