When to consult an eye doctor ?

Consulting an eye doctor regularly is crucial for both children and adults. Many believe children don't need eye care, but this can be dangerous. Children are equally prone to vision problems and eye diseases. Regular eye exams are vital at various stages: at age 3, upon entering pre-primary and secondary school, and whenever a child complains of pain or severe irritation. Immediate consultation is necessary if an object enters the eye or if there's a family history of eye issues.

For adults, annual eye checkups are recommended, while those with diabetes should visit every six months. Even mild eye pain should be taken seriously, especially if there's a family history of eye problems. Adults over 40 experiencing eye pain should check if they need reading glasses. In emergencies such as red eyes, pain, diminished vision, or continuous watering, immediate consultation is essential.

Preparing for Surgery

Before undergoing eye surgery, follow these important instructions to ensure a smooth process:

  • Blood Thinning Drugs: If you're on blood thinners like Aspirin, consult your physician and stop taking these medications at least 3 days (72 hours) before surgery.
  • Diabetic Patients: Do not take anti-diabetic medications (tablets/injections) on the day of surgery. These can be taken up to one day before surgery and then resumed one day after surgery as per your doctor's advice.
  • Other Medications: Continue taking all other medications (for blood pressure, asthma, etc.) as advised by your physician, including on the day of surgery.
  • Lens Power (for cataract surgery): Get your IOL power evaluated before surgery. This test is available at NIO from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm on all days except Sundays and holidays. If not done by 6:00 pm on the previous day, the surgery will not be performed on the scheduled day.
  • Day of Surgery: Have a light breakfast (tea/coffee/milk with 2-3 biscuits) at 6:00 am. Take all morning medications with tea.
  • Hospital Arrival: Report to the hospital with an adult relative who knows your health history.

Items to Bring:

  • NIO O.P.D card and/or letter from the surgeon.
  • Fitness certificate from an M.D physician or pediatrician for children under 12.
  • Blood and urine report, and E.C.G.
  • Memo for CGHS/Company patients.
  • Patients requiring general anesthesia or long-duration surgery should get admitted a day prior to the surgery by 6:00 pm for pre-anesthetic evaluation. Late arrivals may result in rescheduling.

Note: Leave valuables, jewelry, and expensive items at home. The hospital is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
